Critics Consensus

While Uzumaki's animation curiously spirals into an uneven swirl after a strong start, the terrifying allure of Junji Ito's source material lends hypnotic power to this miniseries.

Michael Shane B Uzumaki’s plot intricately weaves together psychological horror, surrealism, and body horror as it follows Kirie Goshima, a high school student, and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito, as they experience the terrifying effects of a spiral curse in their town, Kurouzu-cho. The town, once peaceful and quiet, becomes consumed by the supernatural power of spirals. As the curse spreads, the spirals begin to twist the minds and bodies of the townspeople, leading to bizarre and horrific transformations. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Audience Member c'est vraiment dommage car le première épisode était très fidèle a l'original mais les épisode d'après ne rende pas du tout hommage a se super manga l'histoire a était trop coupé on perd en compréhension Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review quigley_thomas Q Animation aside, it has the worst pacing possible, would not recommend. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Lleimz M Americans dont understand the bizarre, unique and cosmic horror Of Junji Ito, they just want cliche jumpscares and stories that has been told once and again over and over. Ito has delivered masterpieces on graphics novels. This is a good effort with the stain of a second episode that is not at its best animación levels, and feel rushed on the second half of the last episode but it's very good. I hope if someday someone directs Hellstar Remina, wil make justice to that masterwork. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Christopher M The animation is ok, the stories are just down-right bizarre, but not bad overall. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Penelope B Junji Ito made some absolute masterpieces and I don't think this show does a good job using them properly. 1st episode? Fantastic, had a similar ish feel to the source material. 2nd episode+ ? Immediate drop in quality from ep 1 and lost all feel. The animation quality basically went from a solid 8(/10) to 3.
