Shiba Miyuki[]
Mayumi respects Miyuki and is glad that Miyuki shows no interest in distinguishing the superiority of the "Blooms" over the "Weeds". She also acknowledges Miyuki's unique powers and strong magic, with the pair being on good and friendly terms as junior and senior on the student council.
Mayumi playfully teases her in regards to her relationship with Tatsuya, whilst also taking advantage of Miyuki's words and desires to get Tatsuya involved in events such as the Nine Schools Competition.[1] On the other hand, Miyuki is prone to getting jealous whenever Mayumi gets too close to Tatsuya. Knowing this, Mayumi purposefully does so when she gets the chance in order to tease her adorable junior.
Shiba Tatsuya[]
Mayumi met on his first day at First High[2] and the pair later become good friends, with Mayumi eventually seeing him as a potential love interest. To Mayumi, Tatsuya is a special individual with unique skills and vast knowledge of magic that she finds captivating and worthy of her attention and praise.
It was revealed that Mayumi had already known of Tatsuya before he attended their school due to an incident on March 25th, 2095. Discussing the incident and showing Watanabe Mari evidence that the ones involved were new students, she and Mari hoped to recruit them both into one of the school's committees due to the lasting first impression they made on them.[3]
Over time, Mayumi develops feelings for Tatsuya.[4][5][6] This is displayed by the fact that Mayumi is comfortable enough to drop her guard around Tatsuya,[7] and that she displays jealousy whenever Tatsuya praises other girls, such as Suzune.[8]
By August 2095, she trusted him enough to ask for him to help her stretch at the Nine Schools Competition as well and take care of her CAD, which is very risky for a magician, especially for a magician of her calibre. She likes that he doesn’t treat her over formerly yet is still respectful, unlike many other people she came across. At first, she jokingly said that he was like a little brother to her but gradually it became much more than that after she gets to know his character and powers more. Interestingly enough, Mayumi is prone to becoming flustered whenever he directs his praises at her - something which she should have grown accustomed to by now due to her upbringing. On one occasion when they were alone, she became shy and reddened after he teased her back and jokingly suggested he would not have hesitated to make a move on her if there were no surveillance camera.[8]
Mayumi has also seen many of Tatsuya's powers first hand, even noticing things others miss such as during the Monolith Code Competition, when she noticed Tatsuya recovering from a fatal attack instantaneously to defeat Ichijou Masaki.[9] During the Yokohama Incident, using Multi-Scope, she also saw Tatsuya using Mist Dispersion to destroy a large truck, which left her shocked.[10]
She was left speechless when she learned that Tatsuya was a Special Officer in the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion[10] and saw how he cured Kirihara and Kei from their life-threatening wounds. When Miyuki explained this unique ability of his, Mayumi, along with several others, promised not to tell anyone about Tatsuya, displaying her loyalty and the depth of her friendship with him.[11]
After the death of Nakura, she was worried about asking Tatsuya for help instead of Juumonji Katsuto. Due to Mayumi's strange focus on Tatsuya's circumstances, Mari voices her suspicion that Mayumi is in love with Tatsuya. Mayumi weakly and unconvincingly objects to the fact.[4] While investigating Nakura's death together, Mayumi ends up at a hotel in Kyoto with him. Due to things not going the way she wanted, Mayumi gets drunk and upon being escorted back to her room, tries to teasingly flirt with him until Tatsuya puts a stop to things, due to how drunk she is.[7] Having remembered what happened, Mayumi returns to her playful ways at the National Magic High School Thesis Competition, where she Mayumi playfully told Tatsuya that she will forget what happened that night in front of Miyuki[12]
After Yotsuba Maya announced her heir, Kouichi soon tells his daughters that Tatsuya and Miyuki are from the Yotsuba Clan. When doing so he noticed the uncharacteristically shocked behaviour of Mayumi after she learned about it. Kouichi also told them that Tatsuya and Miyuki are engaged and then proceeded to ask Mayumi what she thought of Tatsuya as someone of the opposite sex which made Mayumi blush when she answered the question. Despite her fathers prompting, Mayumi declines to pursue Tatsuya, not wanting to commit the taboo of targeting an engaged man.[5] Despite this, Kouichi still brought the matter of the engagement at the Master Clans Conference and voiced his proposal for Mayumi to marry Tatsuya. However, the meeting was quickly adjourned and Kouichi never received consent for Mayumi to approach Tatsuya as a potential love interest.[6]
Isolation Arc

In the aftermath of Tatsuya's being revealed to be 'Mr Silver' from Taurus Silver when Juumonji Katsuto went to convince Tatsuya to go to the USNA for Project Dione, she tried to resolve things diplomatically, even revealing some of what she knew of Regrowth to Katsuto to avoid thigs getting violent. However, Katsuto challenged Tatsuya to combat and when The fight began to get serious, Mayumi tried to protect Katsuto but was stopped by Miyuki. After the battle concluded and Tatsuya revealed the true motives of Project Dione, she tried to make him reconsider his decision of downright abstaining and at least pretend that he would join the program temporarily so that he wouldn’t have to be isolated, though her words failed to reach him.[13] |
Magian Company
Spoiler |
---|
There is little direct interaction between the two of them after the events of the duel, and over time her feelings wane. Although they are able to maintain a friendship by the time the Magian Company is founded in 2100, Mayumi has moved on from Tatsuya. And although she has not yet gotten engaged, she has participated in a lot of formal marriage interviews throughout her time at university. Upon applying to the Magian Company at her father's behest, Tatsuya allows her to continue using casual speech with him, but requests that she address him formally with the 'san' honorific rather than the more endearing 'kun' she had been using. This indicates they can remain as friends, but that their relationship will be strictly employer and employee at the company and establishing a clear distinction in their relationship going forwards.[14] |
Saegusa Izumi[]
As her elder sister, Mayumi cares deeply for Izumi and is shown to be embarrassed by her eccentric actions at times.[15]
Saegusa Kasumi[]
As her elder sister, Mayumi cares deeply for Kasumi, similar to how she cares for Izumi. Mayumi is sometimes annoyed by Kasumi's overprotective nature when it comes to her.[15]
Hattori Gyoubushoujo Hanzou[]

Although she disapproves of Hattori's discrimination between Course 1 and Course 2 students,[16] Mayumi still respects Hattori as a fellow member of the Student Council. However, Hattori is often the victim whenever Mayumi has her little "fits".[17] For instance, he was the guinea pig of her chocolate plan, as she used him to attract Tatsuya's attention.
Juumonji Katsuto[]
Mayumi's relationship with Katsuto is strictly business-oriented and partly based on friendship. An example of this business-like relationship is when Katsuto discusses a potentail engagement to her with Tatsuya[18]
Alongside Mari, Suzune and Tatsuya, Katsuto is someone who has been influential[19] and supportive[20] of Mayumi's decision making as well as possessing the ability to calm her down when she appears to be in distress.[21][9] There are numerous dialogues between the pair discussing issues surrounding both of their houses.[22]
Mayumi thinks that Katsuto is a reliable ally and friend who she can confide her worries with.[23] Her relationship with Katsuto remained platonic throughout the series.[24]
Ichihara Suzune[]
Suzune, nicknamed "Rin-chan" by Mayumi, is a good friend of Mayumi's who was invited by Mayumi to join the Student Council and whose presence Mayumi is grateful for.[25]
Nakajou Azusa[]
Mayumi gave Azusa the nickname "A-chan"[16] and held her in high enough regard to entrust her with the role of the next Student Council President after her term of service came to a close.[26]
Watanabe Mari[]
Mayumi and Mari are close friends, and are two of the "Big Three" during their time at First High. The two share the same view that "Blooms" and "Weeds" shouldn't be antagonistic towards one another, and usually work together when trying to persuade people into taking certain actions.[16] Between the two, Mayumi is usually the more playful one while Mari is the more serious one.
Due to their close friendship, Mayumi treats Mari as a confidant. After Nakura Saburou's death, it is Mari that Mayumi first voices her concerns to, and it is Mari that suggests that she should turn to someone outside of the Saegusa Family.[4]
The pair's friendship survives beyond graduation, with them still being close and keeping in regular contact despite going to different universities and following different career paths.[27]
Tookami Ryousuke[]
Mayumi and Tookami started working at the Magian Company nearly at the same time where they would occasionally work[28] and even fight together against enemies. There are also times that Ryousuke would protect Mayumi when she is in danger and is greatful to Ryousuke that would develop feelings towards him.[29]
