Synopsis
Luis Bunuel's Masterpiece of Erotica!
Beautiful young housewife Séverine Serizy cannot reconcile her masochistic fantasies with her everyday life alongside dutiful husband Pierre. When her lovestruck friend Henri mentions a secretive high-class brothel run by Madame Anais, Séverine begins to work there during the day under the name Belle de Jour. But when one of her clients grows possessive, she must try to go back to her normal life.

“Do you come here often?” “Every day in my thoughts.”
What’s in the box?
It is a question asked by any viewer of Pulp Fiction or Kiss Me Deadly, with an answer alternately of “Whatever most intrigues you,” or “Whatever most frightens you,” or “Whatever you want there to be.” Of course, when you think about it, those are often the same thing—the push-pull of fascination and repulsion and desire are frequently so intertwined as to be inseparable, and for reasons so personal and deep-seated we can seldom articulate them. But refusing to answer “What’s in the box?” with any degree of specificity is alluringly ambiguous rather than maddeningly vague because the box’s contents are utterly idiosyncratic. This is the…

Dark, weird, and fascinating. Aka, my thing. Buñuel’s filmmaking style has always seemed like something that would be my thing so I finally decided to start getting into his stuff by watching this. Absolutely loved it. Haven’t been this absorbed in a film in awhile. The surrealism in this film works incredibly well, too. So much to say about it, that box scene is great. Whenever a film ends and I find myself staring at the black screen for longer than I thought, you know it’s a good one. I can see myself giving this a 5 somewhere down the line for some reason.
P.S. I want a remake with Timothee Chalamet as Marcel lol. -

Is this a pathetic male fantasy? Belle de Jour is about a woman completely enslaved by her desires, living for her humiliation. Sex and love are different things, with a process of having sex without love needed for understanding the value of love. This is a film of dreams and fantasies, presented as pretty much the same. It's an exercise in showcasing the sterility of perversion when we are made impartial observers to it. Fetishes are only strange when they aren't our own. You can love one thing and lust for another. In Belle de Jour, the contrast is between virtuous purity and desirable degradation. In this sense, it's a naughty girl beneath a good girl exterior. I ask again, is this a male fantasy?

i am obsessed with the surrealism in belle de jour and the way that buñuel doesn't let you in on what is séverine's fantasy and what is reality. catherine deneuve oozes sensuality and she is so fantastic at playing a character who has two very different sides. i also really loved how all of her clothing was designed by YSL, it made the whole film feel so much classier and so high-end (which is exactly what i always expect when watching a french movie).
in deneuve's own words, "it ends tragically, because no other ending is possible."

Right around the halfway point of Belle de Jour— Luis Buñuel’s erotic, surrealist classic — a supposedly unusual request from a client at the small Parisian brothel where the protagonist works arrives without much fanfare. What follows involves a small lacquered box which emits a sound best described as the buzz of a mosquito and a sexual encounter between Séverine and the client that leaves some of the staff scared/puzzled. It's a small moment, comprising maybe 3 minutes of the entire film, and can easily be seen as another vignette in Séverine's day-to-day life, but the sequence is the key to unraveling Belle de Jour. It's a mini-mystery that is presented without an answer (we never find out what's inside…
