Standard-Times A ashes that were found in a vacant lot in Brady have been returned to the right-fill owner The remains of Linda Sue Arnold are back in the home of her daughter Ronda Pack of Brady Pack 33 picked up her mother's remains Thursday at the First American Bank in Brady The box containing ashes has been at the bank since branch manager Bill Spiller found them over the weekend a relief that someone found her and took care of Pack said Pack was unaware her moth Pack said she thinks the box a little larger than a shoebox was mistaken for something valuable She thinks the package was discarded when its contents were discovered Spiller found the remains while mowing grass on the lot which he had bought about a year ago He kept the package in his office while he tried to find relatives or friends of Arnold whose name was on the box The question of how the ashes ended up in a vacant lot was a topic of conversation among the bank's employees and customers in Brady a town of Oakland Street Just after 11 pm According to police Smith 26 went to the house of his ex-girlfriend While there Smith got into a fight with a man and was choked police said Man indicted A Taylor County Grand Jury Thursday indicted a man for a fatal hit-and-run accident in December Zairre Eugene Mayes was indicted for failing to stop and render aid in the death of Julian Edward Flores Mayes was arrested in March and posted $10000 bond Failure to stop and render aid carries a hybrid charge meaning that if Mayes is convicted he could spend up to two years in Jail or five years in prison Taylor County District Attorney James Eidson said The indictment comes more than six months after Flores was found dead on Morris Street on Dec 12 Initial police reports believed Flores 42 died after he was struck by a car After an investigation police believe Flores fell out of a van in which he was riding as it traveled south in the 100 block of Morris Street Police arrested Mayes the driver because he knew Flores had fallen out of the van but failed to return to check whether Flores was injured police said Flores died from injuries he suffered falling from the van according to an autopsy report Reindictment Gladys Gerst was reindicted Tuesday on three felony charges after Nolan County District Attorney Mark Edwards reworded the charges Gerst 66 was Indicted in May on charges of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the now nearly deftinct People for Progress Inc which she led for more than 30 years The charges stem from an investigation into PPI by the FBI the Texas Rangers and the Nolan County Office Founded in 1967 PPI is a Sweetwater-based nonprofit organization that oversaw 27 programs and $15 million in binding at its height Gerst is charged with theft of between $100000 and $200000 in each of the three felony charges The charges went from second-degree to first-degree felonies because the thefts involved a government contract The contract involved a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation Gerst faces seven state jail charges in addition to the three first-degree felony indictments The state jail charges allege Gerst tampered with government records by presenting false or forged invoices for supplies never purchased backdating records and recording false price quotes from suppliers First-degree felony theft carries a sentence of five to 99 years or life in prison A state Jail felony carries a punishment of up to two years in jail Gerst also is eligible for probation on every charge because she does not have a prior felony
